About Me

Bio

Steffan Demetropoulos is a husband, father of four, Army combat veteran, and construction project manager running for Congress to bring working-class leadership back to Michigan’s 10th District.

Steffan learned early the value of hard work and personal responsibility. At just 18 years old, immediately after completing Army Basic Training, he married his wife and stepped into adulthood with a clear sense of duty — not just to his country, but to his family.

“Providing for someone else right after leaving the home that provided for you forces you to grow up fast,” Steffan says. “Responsibility isn’t theoretical — it’s real.”

Today, Steffan and his wife are raising four children — two daughters and two sons — and are active members of St. Sharbel Catholic Church in Macomb County. As a father who did not grow up with one in the home, Steffan believes deeply in the importance of stability, leadership, and presence in a child’s life. He volunteers coaching his kids sports teams and helps with his daughters girl scout sales.

“Children deserve a role model. If a father can be present, he should be. Strong families build strong communities.”

Like many families in Michigan, the Demetropoulos family has felt the squeeze of rising grocery prices, skyrocketing utilities, increasing property taxes, and some of the highest car and home insurance rates in the country. They’ve fundraised within public schools just to give their children more opportunities.

“These aren’t abstract issues. These are real pressures on real families.”

Military Service: Leadership Earned on the Ground

Steffan served on active duty in the United States Army from 2011 to 2016, including a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan in 2012–2013. He later continued his service in the Army Reserves until 2021 with a deployment to Romania.

As an Infantryman (11C) deployed to one of the most dangerous regions of Afghanistan, Steffan served as a gunner on a line crew and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge — a distinction reserved for soldiers who engaged under enemy fire.

At Sperwan Ghar, one of the most contested outposts in Afghanistan, there were two kinds of service: those who directed the mission from a distance and those who lived it on the ground. Steffan lived it on the ground next to his brothers.

He didn’t deploy to manage paperwork or chase titles — he deployed to serve alongside his brothers-in-arms. By age 21, he had earned the rank of Sergeant and later directly led nine soldiers, learning firsthand that leadership isn’t about the title on your desk — it’s about the people standing next to you. He underwent the selection process for Army Special Forces and ended up getting injured in the land navigation portion, tearing his achilles toward the end of selection.

His military service taught him two enduring lessons:

      •     Plans rarely unfold exactly as intended — leaders must adapt and solve problems in real time.

      •     Gratitude matters. In Afghanistan, he saw people who had very little but remained resilient and joyful.

“America has real challenges — but perspective matters. We are blessed, and we should never take that for granted.”

Building Schools

After his active military service, he transitioned to the Army reserves while going to Milwaukee School of Engineering. He got his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering. After that, Steffan attended Louisiana State University for his Graduate Degree in Project Management. Steffan transitioned into the construction industry and now serves as a project manager overseeing large-scale public school construction projects.

He has helped manage projects totaling over $60 million in taxpayer-approved bond funds — ensuring dollars are spent responsibly, transparently, and as promised.

In a district built by auto workers, tradesmen, and skilled laborers, Steffan works alongside the same type of people he hopes to represent.

“I don’t sit in an ivory tower. I work with builders, electricians, welders, and craftsmen. I understand the pride that comes from real work.”

Why He’s Running

Steffan has long believed in public service. As a college student, he once delivered an inaugural speech in a public speaking class — fascinated even then by leadership and responsibility.

But what finally pushed him to run was frustration.

Frustration with leaders who don’t listen.
Frustration with campaign promises that disappear after Election Day.
Frustration with politicians who talk at people instead of with them.

“Michigan’s 10th doesn’t need another ‘command post’ politician. We need someone who understands the trenches — because he’s lived in them.”

Steffan believes the district deserves a working-class representative — someone who understands overtime shifts, rising bills, union halls, shop floors, and school fundraisers.

A Leader Like the People He Serves

Steffan Demetropoulos is not a career politician.

He is a father, a veteran, and a project manager who believes leadership means listening, adapting, and delivering results.

He’s running for Congress to serve — not to posture.

And he’s ready to get to work.
